"What the what was that?" as SCTVs Molly Earl might have opined, has she come upon Heavy Sex Vibe. The band is fronted by the fiery Rosita Stone, who formerly led a hard-rock outfit that bore her name and was known for its over-the-top shows. HSV carries on that tradition to the max, in both a five-piece and this night's trio format (with guitarist Greg Brozek and percussionist/drummer Jeff Wilson). Stone's new songs are genre-defying cut-and-pastes of folk, Mexican, Middle Eastern, rock and performance elements. The lyrics to such tunes as "Tribal Dance" and "Ishwaria" veer from the sloganMc to the wildly imagistic, much like the volatile Stone herself. On a Sneaky Dee's stage lit by dozens of candles, barefoot and dressed in about six ounces of fringe and halter, incanting her lyrics from a crouching position, Stone evokes great crazy ladies, from Lucy Ricardo to Laurie Anderson. Maybe Linda Ronstadt on mushrooms. (Speaking of Ronstadt, her longtime collaborator Jorge Lopez will hook up with Stone on Sept 13 for a set of mariaci standards at the Bam Boo.)
